October 2004 Nelson, NZ
Next Season 2005
Alvei is currently in Nelson, New Zealand. We will be here until April 2005 when we return to the tropics. We will be doing some sailing around the Nelson area during summer in January and February; however, the main focus of our time here is toward maintenance. We have a main engine to overhaul and a long list of jobs to complete before we can make a deep sea passage.
Our itinerary is not yet firm, the basic plan to date, is to depart New Zealand in early April. We will sail to Samoa, Tonga and to Fiji. In July, when we are in Suva, Alvei will come out of the water for our annual haulout. We will be in Vanuatu during August and September helping Project MARC, (Medical Aid to Remote Communities), do medical assessments of the outlying islands in the group. They are using our 6 double berth cabins during this time. We will have room for only 5 crew and myself during these 2 months in order to make room for the MARC people.
In October we will sail another voyage within Vanuatu before sailing for Australia. We expect to be in Australia for the tropical cyclone season from November to April, when we again return to the tropics.
We are considering becoming more involved with medical aid, however we won’t have details until after our first season with MARC. The following season’s itinerary will depend largely on that.
Please understand Alvei operates as a non-profit sailing co-operative. We are not supported by outside funds. Our only source of funding and crew comes from the people in the co-op. We are looking for more crew as soon as possible.
I will attach a letter that better explains how the co-op works. Next seasons itinerary will be posted in late November.
We are accepting crew now, however, our season will officially begin 01 January 2005.
If you have specific questions, let me know.
All the best,
Evan
